Chapter 2211: Chapter 2211: Simply Carved from the Same Mold
No, it wasn’t that she forgot. She simply hadn’t expected it—hadn’t expected that the wet nurse, whom she had treated as a daughter, would betray her and even confess her secret with her brother.
“How could you… how could you betray me…”
How could she betray her? She had killed everyone else but spared only the wet nurse, and yet she was betrayed like this?
“My lady, this old servant truly could not endure any longer. They were too cruel! This old servant was in pain!”
The wet nurse also knew that betraying the Empress was wrong. She knelt on the ground, wailing and begging for her forgiveness.
If she had any other choice, would she willingly betray her mistress? But what options did she have? Her family, over a dozen people, were in their hands. They even tortured her.
If she didn’t reveal something, how could she hope to survive?
“My lady, please save this old servant, save me!”
The Empress’s whole body bristled with rage, her mind churning with the wet nurse’s words.
Save her?
How could she possibly save her?
Now that the Empress Dowager knew everything, knew that Zun’er was not the Emperor Zhong’s biological son, the Empress herself was barely holding on. What could she use to save the wet nurse?
Besides, for someone who had betrayed her, why should she even try to save her?
“You wretched fool, why don’t you just die? I’ll kill you, you filthy traitor!” Overcome with rage, she shoved the child in her arms away and lunged at the wet nurse.
“Wah!”
The child was pushed to the ground nearby, the back of his head striking the corner of a table, causing him to cry out in pain.
But the Empress seemed as if she didn’t even hear it. She pounced on the wet nurse, her slender, well-maintained hands savagely striking her face.
“You useless old hag! When have I ever treated you poorly? And you dare betray me? If I’d known how unreliable you were, I should’ve let my brother kill you back then!”
The wet nurse was beaten senseless, unable to fight back, wailing miserably on the ground.
The Empress Dowager, watching this scene unfold, closed her eyes briefly, then turned to look at Zun’er, sighing and shaking her head.
This child—she had doted on him, spoiled him, seen him snatch pastries from other princes, laughing heartily while taunting them for being useless.
She had never imagined that this child wasn’t of royal blood.
Taking a deep breath, she lifted her hand to rub her forehead. Her head spun slightly, and she nearly collapsed, caught just in time by the nanny at her side.
“Empress Dowager, are you alright? Are you unwell?”
“No matter.”
Supported by her nanny, the Empress Dowager waved her hand dismissively.
Angry as she was, she couldn’t harm herself. She had to suppress the fiery rage in her heart.
“Separate them,” she ordered.
Upon hearing the command, the palace maids stepped forward to pull the Empress and the wet nurse apart.
Even as she was restrained by the maids, the Empress kicked towards the wet nurse, as though wishing she could end her life on the spot and eliminate all evidence.
“How dare you betray me? I’ll make sure you die a miserable death!”
Unable to reach her, she spat venomous threats. Anyone who dared to betray her would never escape her wrath.
When she saw her brother, she would demand that he kill this wet nurse at once, ending any potential future trouble.
“Mother, Mother, this is slander! She is slandering your daughter-in-law! Zun’er truly is your biological grandson! Don’t listen to others’ malicious provocations—they simply can’t stand to see the Imperial clan thrive.
Look at Zun’er; doesn’t he resemble His Majesty so much? They’re practically carved from the same mold!”
