Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The winch on the tower rumbled as it turned, drawing open the two massive portcullises inside the gate tunnel. Finally, the last heavy city gate began to rise.
Boom!
Tang Yueshan’s Black Wind Cavalry horse collapsed.
Horse and rider crashed heavily to the ground.
Clenching her teeth, Gu Jiao didn’t pause for even a second. She sprinted toward the gate with everything she had.
Xuanyuan Qi…
Hold on…
You must hold on…
At the very center of the pass, Xuanyuan Qi stood, drenched in blood, defending with all that remained in him. Blood dripped steadily from his blade, and his strength and life force were rapidly draining away.
Yue Liuyi observed coldly, “The gates are open! Quyang City has less than ten thousand troops capable of fighting! This is our chance, let’s strike while they’re vulnerable and storm the city!”
Zhu Zhangkuang clutched his chest and growled, “But this guy isn’t dead yet!”
Yue Liuyi wiped the blood from the corner of her lips and looked toward Xuanyuan Qi, who had just been injured by a Jin soldier after collapsing from exhaustion. “He’s nearly spent. Once we’re in, we kill that boy first, then take down their city commander. This is the perfect opportunity to capture Quyang City. Heaven itself favors us!”
Zhu Zhangkuang also found the plan reasonable and charged toward Xuanyuan Qi once more, but what he never expected was that, even in such a depleted state, Xuanyuan Qi could still unleash a sword strike powerful enough to send him flying again!
Grinding his teeth in frustration, he roared, “Damn it!”
Yue Liuyi, panting heavily, said between breaths, “I’ve done the calculation. We must finish him off within ten moves, otherwise we won’t make it in time.”
Zhu Zhangkuang, still shaken, replied with lingering fear, “But with the strength you and I possess, forget ten moves, even in twenty, we can’t do a thing to him!”
Yue Liuyi was so furious she nearly coughed up blood. “That man’s a monster!”
Her reaction was not without reason. Xuanyuan Qi was like some undead creature that had crawled out from the depths of the underworld: unafraid of death, impervious to pain, impervious to strikes, and impossible to kill.
Clenching her fists tightly, Yue Liuyi cast a cold sideways glance at Zhu Zhangkuang, who was clearly on the verge of retreating, and scoffed, “You go hide if you want! But I won’t! Today, it’s either him or me. Only one of us walks away alive!”
With that, she drew the soft sword at her waist, and activating her qinggong, she darted straight toward Xuanyuan Qi with deadly precision.
Her soft sword coiled tightly around Xuanyuan Qi’s longsword. The corners of her lips lifted in a sly smile as a poisoned needle flew from her fingertips, aimed directly at Xuanyuan Qi’s vital point.
Xuanyuan Qi suddenly pulled back his sword with great force, the burst of sword qi not only sent Yue Liuyi flying but also shattered her poisoned needle in midair.
She was slammed into the stone wall behind her and then rebounded hard from the impact, falling in a disheveled heap at Xuanyuan Qi’s feet.
Xuanyuan Qi immediately drove his sword toward the center of Yue Liuyi’s forehead!
“Ah——” Yue Liuyi screamed in terror, squeezing her eyes shut and turning her face away.
She heard the unmistakable sound of a blade piercing flesh, but the searing pain she was expecting never came.
A single drop of hot blood splashed onto her cheek. She opened her eyes and saw Xuanyuan Qi’s sword frozen just half an inch from her forehead, so close it could have pierced her skull.
Her gaze slowly drifted upward.
Xuanyuan Qi’s chest had been run through by a long, gleaming spear.
That weapon looked oddly familiar…
She turned her head back and saw, beneath the darkening night sky, a man dressed in white brocade robes astride a majestic, deep-chestnut warhorse.
The man exuded an aura unmatched in the world, his eyes calm and ice-cold.
Yue Liuyi’s eyes lit up. “My Lord!”
Zhu Zhangkuang hurriedly bowed deeply as well. “My Lord!”
Gongsun Yu lifted his hand in a light, dismissive gesture.
Yue Liuyi took the opportunity to kick over the fallen Xuanyuan Qi. “So arrogant, huh? Come on, be arrogant again!”
Blood dripped steadily from Xuanyuan Qi’s chest, pooling at his feet. He gripped his longsword tightly, forcing himself to stand upright despite the immense pain.
Behind him, a formation of elite archers had already drawn their bows in unison, aiming their arrows squarely at Xuanyuan Qi.
With a long spear still embedded in his body, Xuanyuan Qi didn’t waste energy trying to remove it. Instead, dragging his sword along the ground, he began walking step by step toward Gongsun Yu.
The edge of his blade scraped against the hard stone floor, producing a piercing screech.
At the same time, the Black Wind King leapt with one bound through the city gate.
Gu Jiao didn’t look back.
Her chest tightened uncontrollably, and her hands, still gripping the reins, began to tremble.
“Commander Xiao!” Zhao Dengfeng called out to her from atop his horse.
But she didn’t seem to hear him at all.
She released her numb hands, dismounted with practiced ease, and walked up the city wall with a face of icy composure.
Only Wen Renchong noticed that her whole body was trembling slightly.
One Jin soldier made a move to attack Xuanyuan Qi, but Gongsun Yu raised his hand and stopped him with a gesture.
Xuanyuan Qi’s vision had become so blurred with blood that he could barely see. His energy was long since overdrawn; his core had burst, his bones were broken, and blood streamed from every orifice.
Agonizing pain gnawed at every corner of his body.
Yet his steps, though heavy, pressed forward with unyielding resolve as he walked toward Gongsun Yu.
Standing beside Gongsun Yu’s horse, Yue Liuyi looked up at her lord in confusion. “My Lord…”
“Let him come.” Gongsun Yu said calmly.
The short distance of just over ten paces felt like a lifetime to Xuanyuan Qi.
Using the last vestiges of his strength, Xuanyuan Qi lifted his longsword high… and launched one final strike toward Gongsun Yu.
*Puchi—*
The sword pierced into flesh.
It was Gongsun Yu’s sword.
*Bang!*
The city gate slammed shut with a thunderous sound.
Gu Jiao stood atop the towering city wall, her hands clutching the battlements so tightly that they tore open large patches of skin, blood staining the stones. “Raise the banner!” she commanded, her voice hoarse but unwavering.
“R-Raise what banner?” General Ji froze in confusion for a brief moment.
Wen Renchong dashed up, leaping lightly onto the ramparts with a flick of his toe, and unfurled the eagle-embroidered banner clutched in his hand!
Under the sweeping western wind, the Great Yan war flag and the Xuanyuan command banner billowed side by side, rippling fiercely against the sky!
Xuanyuan Qi, utterly drained of strength, collapsed onto his knees. He raised his head weakly, gazing from afar in the direction of the city wall.
Was that… the Xuanyuan family’s command banner?
To be able to see it one last time before death…
How wonderful…
He could go without regrets now…
Zheng’er, forgive your father… I can no longer wait for the day when the two of us would finally be reunited.
Lord of the Shadows…
Xuanyuan Qi… your mission has been fulfilled.
In the next life, may we meet again.
“Father——”
From the official road behind them came a voice so grief-stricken it could tear through the soul.
Xuanyuan Qi slowly closed his eyes, and his arm fell lifelessly to the ground.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
