Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
“Hey, girl, how much farther do we have to go?”
Having been scared half to death by the ghostly atmosphere earlier, Tang Yueshan now sat back on his horse with a face full of composure, insisting that his earlier behavior had merely been an attempt to protect her and not out of fear.
“We’re almost there.” Gu Jiao replied. “There should be a cave up ahead. We’ll spend the night there.”
Gu Jiao’s grasp of the borderlands’ geography was so precise it was almost unsettling. But Tang Yueshan assumed she had simply done her homework ahead of time and memorized every map.
Gripping his reins, Tang Yueshan sighed and said, “Speaking of which, we’ve been in Pucheng for a whole day now and still haven’t run into Old Gu. Where do you think he went? Could he have gone to the military camp? Gongsun Yu went there today too; don’t tell me Old Gu was unlucky enough to run into him?”
“Hey, girl, why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Come on, at least give me a sound…”
Tang Yueshan turned his head in exasperation to look at Gu Jiao, only to see nothing but an empty, silent forest. Every word he had been about to say caught in his throat.
……
The forest had begun to fill with fog.
Once again, the moonlight overhead had vanished from sight.
With the loss of any celestial reference, a person’s sense of direction naturally dulled and became unreliable.
The Black Wind King, while a valiant and battle-hardened warhorse, was still not a creature raised in the forest.
To him, this dense, eerie woodland was just as foreign and bewildering as it was to any outsider.
Gu Jiao was the first to realize that she and Tang Yueshan had become separated, though she made no attempt to call out for him. Because in a place like this, it was impossible to tell whether her voice would attract Tang Yueshan or the Jin soldiers first.
“This place feels… strange.”
Gu Jiao swept her gaze around cautiously.
She had no concrete evidence to support that claim, just the raw intuition honed from years of training in danger.
Whoosh!
A shadow darted swiftly behind her.
Gu Jiao’s ears twitched slightly, but her expression remained completely unchanged, calm as ever.
She gestured for the Black Wind King to keep moving forward.
Whoosh!
Another figure flickered behind her once more.
Still, Gu Jiao didn’t pause for even a moment.
Man and horse pressed forward in silence, undisturbed.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
It seemed the shadows had been thoroughly provoked, flitting back and forth through the darkness, attempting with increasing desperation to instill fear in her.
Yet Gu Jiao didn’t even bat an eyelid.
“Kekeke… this time, the living one who’s wandered into our Ghost Mountain is really something else… Look at him, not afraid at all… not even his horse…”
“I want to eat his horse…”
“Fool, how can horse meat taste better than human? I’ve been stuck in the underworld so long I’ve forgotten what living flesh smells like… Mmm, it’s such a sweet scent…”
“Tonight, the gates of the underworld are open, and King Yama himself descends. Even lowly ghosts like us can finally have a taste of the living… kekeke…”
Lowly ghosts?
That would explain it.
Gu Jiao acted as if she hadn’t heard the unsettling murmurs at all, continuing deeper into the forest with the Black Wind King at her side.
But they hadn’t gone more than a few steps when a large net suddenly dropped from above, aimed straight at her.
With a crisp motion, Gu Jiao drew the whip at her waist and lashed it into the darkness with a sharp crack that sliced through the air.
Almost simultaneously, a pale little figure was yanked out from the shadows by her whip.
With swift efficiency, Gu Jiao flipped him over and tied him securely to the horse’s back.
As the net fell toward her, she reached up and grabbed it with one hand, then flung it aside effortlessly.
These petty tricks might be effective against someone like Tang Yueshan, who feared ghosts, but they were laughable to someone like her, as she wasn’t afraid in the slightest.
Gu Jiao looked at the small figure now slumped across her saddle… wait, was that a little… Black Impermanence?
She asked coolly, “What are you people?”
Whoosh!
The rest of the figures scattered like startled birds, vanishing without a trace into the forest.
The little Black Impermanence had a long, oversized tongue dangling from his mouth, and he struggled as he declared, “I am Black Impermanence! Don’t you dare offend me! His Highness the Ghost King will eat you alive!”
So he really did call himself Black Impermanence.
Gu Jiao flicked her finger against his forehead.
The little ghost yelped in pain, “Oww!”
Gu Jiao chuckled, “Can ghosts even feel pain?”
The little Black Impermanence was momentarily speechless, then spat out his cumbersome tongue and answered in clear, precise diction, “I’m still a child. You’re an adult. Your body is full of yang energy. When you touch me, it burns and injures my soul, that’s why I screamed!”
With that, he promptly stuffed his tongue back into his mouth.
His logic was surprisingly well-constructed, and Gu Jiao gave him a silent thumbs-up in her mind.
“How old are you?” Gu Jiao asked.
“Seven.”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than the little Black Impermanence regretted them, hastily correcting himself, “Seven hundred years old!”
Gu Jiao’s mouth twitched slightly before she straightened her expression and said sternly, “You have two choices. First, take me to meet your king.”
“It’s Ghost King!” the little Black Impermanence yanked out his long tongue and shouted ferociously, “The supreme and almighty His Highness the Ghost King of the Netherworld! He possesses divine powers beyond comprehension! He can eat… eat a hundred living beings like you!”
“It’s all the same.” Gu Jiao waved her hand indifferently. “Second, hand over my companion.”
The little Black Impermanence insisted, “We didn’t capture your companion!”
Gu Jiao replied coolly, “Then it sounds like you’re choosing the first option.”
The little Black Impermanence huffed, “You’re not qualified to meet our Ghost King! Our Ghost King——ah!”
Before he could finish, Gu Jiao suddenly snatched him up, causing him to scream in fright.
An arrow zipped past the saddle, flying right through the spot where the little Black Impermanence had been lying just a moment earlier, embedding itself with a thunk into the nearby tree.
The arrow’s tail vibrated with such force that it left a blur in the air. It was clear how much power had been behind the shot. Had Gu Jiao not reacted as swiftly as she did, the little ghost would have been turned into a kebab.
Terrified into silence, the little Black Impermanence could only tremble.
Gu Jiao placed him back on the saddle, her cold gaze shifting to the group of people now emerging from the shadows.
They were none other than the Jin soldiers who had been chasing them all this way.
What surprised Gu Jiao was that leading them wasn’t Xie Hangzhou, but Min Hongyi.
If it had been Xie Hangzhou, she might still have had room to maneuver through conversation, but Min Hongyi, like Gongsun Yu, was a pure, unrelenting war fanatic.
Min Hongyi grinned wickedly and said, “So it turns out you’re in league with these ghost-playing freaks. I was wondering why you’d run here of all places.”
Gu Jiao met his sharp, oppressive gaze without flinching and said calmly, “He has nothing to do with me. Let him go.”
“Let him go, so he can go fetch reinforcements? Do you take me for a fool?” Min Hongyi sneered, snatching a bow from one of his men and firing an arrow directly at the little Black Impermanence in Gu Jiao’s arms!
The Black Wind King sprang forward with a sudden leap, dodging the deadly arrow.
Min Hongyi fired another shot, only for Gu Jiao to knock it aside with a crack of her whip.
Enraged, Min Hongyi hurled the bow aside and drew the broadsword at his waist, his eyes glinting with bloodlust as he growled, “Fine, I’ll just kill you myself!”
Gu Jiao: He was still underestimating me… maybe I can use that.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
