Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao didn’t move. She stood as if frozen in fear beneath the weight of Min Hongyi’s killing intent, allowing him to launch into the air with his sword raised high.
Just as the blade was about to fall upon her, Gu Jiao lashed out with her whip, catching the hilt of his sword and hurling it viciously away!
Blade and man flew together.
Min Hongyi was thrown through the air like a ragdoll. He had, in fact, let down his guard. The youth looked so young, and her strike had shown no internal force. He thought using just a fraction of his own power would be more than enough.
The result? He got flung away.
Furious and humiliated, Min Hongyi kicked off a tree trunk midair, flipped nimbly to regain his footing, and lunged forward with his blade once more.
But this time, his strike was anything but careless.
Gu Jiao had to dodge. If she clashed head-on, the force of the impact might hurt the child and the Black Wind King.
“Hold on tight!”
Gu Jiao leapt from her horse, charging several paces forward and snapping her whip around Min Hongyi’s waist.
This kid’s strength… he actually managed to hold me back! Min Hongyi’s brows furrowed in surprise at Gu Jiao’s display of raw power, and yet his heart surged with a feverish excitement.
A worthy opponent. Finally something worth killing.
Min Hongyi sneered, pivoted his sword, and slashed down hard on Gu Jiao’s whip.
The whip was sliced clean in two, and the force of the break sent Gu Jiao staggering several steps back.
If this were nine years later, she would have the power to kill Min Hongyi with ease. But right now, he was a serious threat.
Min Hongyi threw his head back and laughed wildly, “Boy, what else have you got?”
Gu Jiao responded, “I’m this strong… and you’re really willing to kill me?”
Min Hongyi paused.
Gu Jiao coaxed gently, “Why not take me back and offer me to Gongsun Yu? With my help, you just might finally surpass Xie Hangzhou.”
A rare talent like this youth… if he really——
Whoosh!
Gu Jiao swiftly swung her arm backward and released Tanghua needles from her hand in a sharp, precise motion!
Min Hongyi, though a highly skilled warrior, unfortunately lacked the cunning and quick thinking of Xie Hangzhou. It was no wonder he was always overshadowed by him.
He tried to block the needle with his blade, but he was still a moment too late, and one of the Tanghua needles embedded itself in his abdomen!
The needle was laced with poison!
Min Hongyi immediately pressed a major acupoint near the wound to prevent the venom from spreading through his body.
“You little brat, you’ve truly angered me now! I had planned to give you a quick death, but I’ve changed my mind! I’ll sever your arms, shatter every bone in your body, and finally chop off your head!”
“Waaaah!” The little Black Impermanence burst into tears, utterly terrified.
Still in a fury, Min Hongyi found the child’s crying intolerable. Without hesitation, he slashed his blade straight at the boy’s head!
The attack came head-on, and with the Black Wind King unable to advance or retreat in time, the little Black Impermanence was certain to be struck.
So despicable, he wouldn’t even spare a child!
No wonder Jing Kong would severe his limbs. It was well-deserved!
Gu Jiao’s eyes flashed with determination. In a swift lunge, she dove toward her horse and tackled the little Black Impermanence off the saddle, rolling several times with him through the weeds and tangled underbrush.
Min Hongyi seized the opening and swung a second strike, this one so fast that Gu Jiao, with the child in her arms, had no way to dodge in time!
Was this where it would end? Was she about to die here?
If she wanted to survive, there was only one option: throw the child in her arms into the path of the blade.
But Gu Jiao did not choose that.
Clang!
Something struck the edge of Min Hongyi’s blade, sending it off course, and a powerful jolt of numbness shot up his entire arm.
“Who’s there?!”
He whipped his head around, his furious gaze searching the darkness beyond.
Emerging from the mist, a man clad in deep-black ghostly robes and wearing a mask carved with a hundred ghostly faces sat atop a palanquin borne by eighteen fierce wraiths, slowly approaching with an eerie, measured pace.
The palanquin’s sheer curtains fluttered in the night breeze, dancing and twisting like spirits, giving the entire scene an unmistakable air of a spectral procession.
A pale, slender hand with clearly defined knuckles and a porcelain-like luster, eerily white and ghostly, rested with casual grace upon the armrest of the palanquin.
At the front stood two figures, dressed in the iconic black and white robes of the Impermanence twins.
Suddenly, a chilling gust of wind swept through the forest, turning the entire grove oppressively cold and shadowy.
The Jin soldiers looked at each other uneasily, instinctively retreating two steps in sync.
Min Hongyi scoffed disdainfully and barked, “Who do you think you are, putting on this act to scare me? Stop playing these supernatural tricks in front of this general!”
“Playing… supernatural… tricks?”
The man’s thin lips curled into a faint smile as he gently grasped the armrest and rose to his feet.
Yet with that simple movement, the branches of the surrounding trees stirred without any wind, as if the malicious spirits dwelling within were trembling in fearful reverence.
A deeper unease began to take hold of the Jin army’s hearts.
They glanced warily at the pitch-black canopy above them. Was it possible there really were ghosts in the trees?
“It’s bleeding! Th-the trees are bleeding!”
One of the Jin soldiers screamed in panic.
Blood began to ooze from every tree around them, the thick scent of it quickly saturating the air, filling the entire forest with a nauseating stench.
And that was not the end of it. Birds, as if overwhelmed by the encroaching deathly aura, began falling from the trees one after another, until the ground was littered with their lifeless bodies.
Some soldiers collapsed to the ground in terror, their faces pale and limbs trembling.
From the safety of Gu Jiao’s embrace, the little Black Impermanence poked out his head and tearfully pointed at Min Hongyi, crying out, “Your Highness Ghost King! He’s the bad guy! He tried to kill me!”
He didn’t dare run toward the Ghost King, fearing that he might get struck down by Min Hongyi mid-way, so after speaking, he quickly ducked back into Gu Jiao’s arms.
What a pitifully timid little Impermanence.
The man’s dangerously cold gaze locked onto Min Hongyi, and then he took a single step forward, casually placing one foot on the railing of the palanquin.
A fearsome, domineering energy erupted from him all at once, crashing over the area like a tidal wave!
Gu Jiao: Why does this irritating aura feel so familiar? It’s reminding me of someone…
The man spoke indifferently, his voice low and icy, “You dared to come to my Ghost King’s domain and try to kill one of my little underworldlings? You’ve got guts. Trespassing Ghost Mountain is already a capital crime, and now you’ve added another. How about… I skin you alive and make a human-skin lantern?”
The Jin soldiers all visibly shuddered in unison!
This man was dangerously good at shaking morale. If he was allowed to continue spouting this ghostly nonsense, the troops might scatter before the battle even began!
Min Hongyi shouted furiously, “Enough of this bluffing! You think just a few broken remnants can stop my five hundred Jin soldiers?”
“A few?” The man’s lips curled in a cold smile, and with a wave of his broad sleeve, he declared, “Little ghosts, come forth! The Gates of Hell are open tonight. Every living human is yours to feast on!”
The moment his voice fell, Min Hongyi’s instincts told him something was wrong. He glanced around and was horrified to see the trees, the slopes, and every shadowed corner of the forest suddenly crawling with ghost soldiers in armor, appearing in overwhelming numbers!
Min Hongyi’s expression changed drastically, “This is——”
The man said coldly, “Three thousand ghost soldiers. Kill them all, leave no survivors!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
