At the hour of yinshi (3-5 am), dawn had not yet broken.
The capital of the State of Zhao lay quietly under a soft, luminous blanket of snowlight.
Xiao Heng had been running around all night preparing for his father’s funeral. He first entered the palace to inform his grandaunt, uncle, and aunt of the news; his aunt clutched him tightly and sobbed into his shoulder. Afterward, he made a trip to Bishui Alley to bring the news of his father’s death to his granduncle and Yao shi.
Then came the matters of setting up the mourning hall and other related arrangements.
Where the mourning hall would be located and how to quickly gather the necessary items, all had to be addressed. Although they hadn’t recovered his father’s body, a coffin was still essential.
And so, he made one last stop at the coffin shop, carefully selecting a fine, high-quality coffin.
Overwhelming grief consumed him. Exhausted in both body and spirit, he dragged himself home step by step, like a soulless puppet, numb and hollow.
Aunt Yu Jin must have gone out too, probably busy the whole night as well. After all, the funeral of the State of Zhao’s foremost Military Marquis was no small affair.
Meanwhile, the very same foremost Military Marquis of the State of Zhao was holding a small child in his arms and did not leave until Princess Xinyang had been helped back to her room by the servants, and both mother and daughter had fallen asleep.
All his strength had been drained.
He truly couldn’t take another step.
Father and son stumbled upon each other completely by chance, one stood beneath the eaves, the other in the courtyard. They faced one another from a distance, silently staring.
The sky was still dark, and a white lantern under the eaves hadn’t yet been taken down.
Marquis Xuanping stood beneath his own mourning lantern, blood covering his body, his face pale as death.
Xiao Heng stared at his father, dazed and utterly disbelieving. “...It’s not even the seventh day yet, and you’ve already come back as a spirit?”
Marquis Xuanping: “...!!”
I’m not dead, damn it!
Marquis Xuanping’s vision went black and he collapsed with a thud, falling into the snow.
He had finally reached his limit, though whether he fainted from exhaustion or sheer frustration at his son was unclear.
......
Eventually, of course, Xiao Heng realized that it wasn’t his father’s ghost. After all, no ghost would be this weak. And knowing his father’s character, even as a ghost, he would be the most dashing, arrogant, and formidable beauty in the underworld.
He wouldn’t be this disheveled.
As for why his father was here, Xiao Heng had no clue for now.
His mother had already fallen asleep. His older brother had yet to wake and knew nothing. As for Grannie Zhang and the others, they were even more clueless about the situation and simply assumed their Lord Marquis had rushed back late at night.
And not long after he returned, the princess went into labor.
Grannie Zhang even added her own assumptions with a hint of flattery, “The young miss wouldn’t come out all this time, it turns out she was waiting for her father.”
Xiao Heng: “...”
Xiao Heng carried his father to his own room, changed him into one of his own clean sets of clothes, and then went to check on his older brother, his mother… and finally, his newly born baby sister.
To be honest, Xiao Heng was still reeling from it all.
In the span of just one day and night, he had suffered the heartbreak of almost losing his brother, experienced the joy of his recovery, endured the grief of losing his father, and then once again felt the joy of regaining him. The emotional rollercoaster was so extreme, it nearly broke him.
And more importantly, his mother had given birth.
While he was out arranging his father’s funeral at that.
So when he came back, he not only had his father again, but a baby sister too.
“How is this even possible?”
He stared at the tiny baby girl sleeping soundly in her swaddling clothes, held his head in his hands, and suddenly began questioning the very meaning of life.
......
At the borders, in the twelfth lunar month, the war to punish the State of Jin, waged by the five allied nations, was growing more and more intense. Even the State of Liang was eventually forced to join, for if they did not help attack the State of Jin, the other four states——Yan, Zhao, Qing, and Chen——would simply attack Liang alongside Jin.
With the loss of Chu Feipeng, the State of Liang had lost its strongest arm and had no choice but to accept the alliance with the other four nations.
The State of Jin, the undisputed hegemon among the six states, possessed unshakable national strength and military power. Arrogant, domineering, and utterly self-important, it not only roped in the State of Liang as its lapdog, but had also constantly schemed against the other nations.
To this day, it still refused to recognize the Turkic people as a legitimate state, continuing to dismiss them as a minor tribe of barbarians.
Little did anyone know, the Turkic people had absolutely no interest in any so-called official status or recognition. They launched their attack on the State of Jin purely because they found Jin an eyesore, and with winter supplies running low, they simply took the opportunity to loot while the flames were high.
The State of Jin, despite having lost Gongsun Yu, was still able to resist with stubborn tenacity for such a long time; it had to be acknowledged that their strength was indeed formidable.
However, no matter how formidable, it was still no match against the combined military might of six nations.
The cruel irony was that when the allied forces penetrated deep into Jin’s territory, the vanguard troops were, in fact, the army of the State of Liang.
Seeing their former allies now baring their fangs, the State of Jin’s soldiers were so furious they turned green in the face.
Jin, Yan, and Liang had long formed a triangular standoff, where an alliance between any two of the three could pose a deadly threat to the third. When Jin had to choose a partner, it had made its decision with careful deliberation.
It ultimately chose the State of Liang because deep down, the State of Jin despised the State of Yan. And the root of that resentment was fear.
Despite all efforts to suppress the State of Yan, the nightmare had still come to pass.
The State of Jin had tried to persuade the State of Liang that with the two of them united, their forces might still stand a chance of resistance.
But the State of Liang had already been terrified by the Black Wind Cavalry; how could they dare play any underhanded tricks from behind?
The border entered the twelfth lunar month, marking the first New Year they would spend there.
In the military camp, pigs were slaughtered, sheep butchered, dumplings made. Shangguan Yan and Gu Jiao spent New Year's Eve with the soldiers, sharing what celebration they could amidst the fires of war.
“Three days from now, we march.”
Outside the tent, Shangguan Yan stood in the cold wind, cheeks flushed, a faint hint of drunkenness lingering after a few drinks.
Her mind, however, was clear. As she spoke, her gaze rested on the soldiers gathered around the bonfire, celebrating the new year.
Gu Jiao came to her side, followed her gaze for a moment, and asked, “Are you really going in person?”
Shangguan Yan’s expression was cold as she replied, “The Xuanyuan Family’s blood feud must be avenged with my own hands! I will personally storm Shangjing and drag the Emperor of Jin down from his throne!”
Gongsun Yu had slain countless soldiers of the Xuanyuan Family. His actions stemmed partly from his personal ambition and thirst for war, but they also reflected the imperialistic dreams of Jin’s imperial family.
Not a single one of them was innocent. And she would not spare a single one!
Three days later, Chang Wei received orders to return and defend Pucheng, exchanging posts with Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao then led the thirty thousand-strong Black Wind Cavalry, now rested and reorganized, mounted the still-recovering Black Wind King, and rode with Shangguan Yan straight to the front lines, charging into the State of Jin.
It was worth mentioning that on New Year's Eve, a palace coup broke out within Jin’s imperial palace. The imperial guards clashed with the forces of Liao Wang, throwing the country into even greater chaos.
After Liao Wang’s defeat, consumed by the bitterness of losing what he could not possess, he opened checkpoint after checkpoint, paving the way for foreign armies to march straight in.
By the end of the second month, the Black Wind Cavalry and the Gu Family’s elite iron cavalry stormed into the capital of Jin.
The Black Wind King trampled down the gates of the imperial palace, carving a bloody path through the imperial guards.
Shangguan Yan wielded her longsword, striking down foes in one decisive motion, her entire body drenched in the blood of her enemies.
She slaughtered her way up to the imperial audience hall.
They moved with such speed that the officials gathered for the morning court session had no time to flee.
The palace doors were sealed tight, and the clamor of battle outside, be it the clashing of weapons or the screams of the dying, filled the air. Listening closely, it was clear most of the screams came from Jin’s own palace troops.
Inside, the court officials were trembling with fear. Even the new Emperor of Jin, seated on the dragon throne, had gone pale.
With a thunderous bang, the doors of the imperial audience hall were kicked open. Unable to withstand the force, the massive door panels crashed to the floor, and the entire hall shuddered violently.
The officials panicked, throwing the hall into utter chaos.
Shangguan Yan stepped forward, long sword in hand, blood dripping steadily from its blade.
Her gaze was icy, filled with the unrelenting resolve of vengeance. She swept a glance across the entire court of officials and declared, “Those who surrender will be spared.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
