Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
If Ye Qing hadn’t heard about it from his master before setting off, he wouldn’t have known the Han Family had harbored such insane secrets.
He spoke coldly, “They’re nothing but beasts.”
Gu Jiao gave him a sidelong glance and disagreed flatly. “Don’t insult beasts like that.”
Ye Qing was briefly stunned. “Oh.”
As Gu Jiao tended to Xuanyuan Qi’s wounds, her hands suddenly paused. She looked up and asked seriously, “Ye Qing, will purple herb poison at least ease his pain?”
Ye Qing quickly realized that the “he” she was referring to was Xuanyuan Qi.
“He…”
Liao Chen held up his father, who was resting limply in his arms, and turned to look intently at Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao did not withhold the truth from him. As a son, he had the right to know the true condition of his father. “His internal injuries are extremely severe. He endures excruciating pain every single day. For him, living is a constant torment. In truth, death would be a release.”
Liao Chen clenched his fists tightly, his body trembling faintly.
He had never imagined that his father had been suffering like this all these years…
“Yes, it will.” Ye Qing said with certainty.
Either the poison would take his life, ending the pain once and for all.
Or he would survive the poison’s onslaught and be reborn anew.
As if suddenly remembering something, Ye Qing added, “After ingesting purple herb poison, the person enters a state of apparent death. Their condition is indistinguishable from a true corpse. The duration varies. Some remain like that for three hours, others for seven. But if he doesn’t regain consciousness within twelve hours, then it means he is truly gone.”
Gu Jiao’s gaze settled on the man’s face.
Xuanyuan Qi.
You must survive this.
No matter who it is you’ve been waiting for all these years, or what kind of promise lies between you, I believe that person would never want you to die here.
Your mission is not yet complete.
Endure the suffering of this world.
Live on as the soul of the Xuanyuan bloodline, live on as Liao Chen’s father, live on as Jing Kong’s great-uncle.
Witness the dawn of a new dynasty, the coming of a golden age of peace and prosperity.
That is your true purpose.
……
Xuanyuan Qi was brought back to the infirmary camp, and Ye Qing personally stood watch over him.
Liao Chen had pulled himself together.
No matter whether his father could still be saved or not, he could not allow himself to be consumed by grief for too long.
“It was Gongsun Yu, wasn’t it?”
Under the canopy just outside the command tent, Liao Chen spoke in a low voice.
Inside the shelter, it was just him and Gu Jiao, who was examining a map of troop positions.
Gu Jiao responded with a soft sound of affirmation. “Yes. He is the one. The commander-in-chief of this eastern campaign from the State of Jin, the Divine Grand General.”
“I will kill him with my own hands.” Liao Chen said coldly.
Gu Jiao glanced at him. He had shed his monk’s robes and donned the black garments of the Shadow Division, exuding the steely aura of someone born for the battlefield.
“Good.” Gu Jiao replied. “He’s yours.”
The lantern light under the canopy reflected in Liao Chen’s eyes like twin flames of vengeance burning fiercely. “What are the names of the other two?”
Gu Jiao flipped through the map and said, “Zhu Zhangkuang and Yue Liuyi. Both are Gongsun Yu’s close confidants.”
“If they’re there too, I’ll kill them all.” Liao Chen said.
“No one will fight you for the kill, but…” Gu Jiao trailed off as she handed him a map marked with critical positions. “The troops might be divided. They may not all be in the same place. You’ll have to decide who to go after.”
“Gongsun Yu!” Liao Chen answered without hesitation.
Just then, a medical officer emerged from another section of the wounded camp. Gu Jiao called out to him, “How’s Old Tang doing?”
The medical officer hurriedly replied, “Commander Xiao, after taking the antidote you provided, he’s out of danger. He just needs to rest a few days to fully recover.”
Yue Liuyi was an expert in concealed weapons, but not in poison. The antidote from Lady Nan was known to neutralize all toxins…
…with the exception of Shangguan Qing’s.
The thought of Shangguan Qing crossed Gu Jiao’s mind. She closed the map and turned to Liao Chen. “Shangguan Qing is still trapped on Ghost Mountain. We must launch an attack on Pucheng as soon as possible to divert the Jin army stationed there. How many troops does your Shadow Division currently have?”
“Twenty thousand.” Liao Chen replied. “Not all are from the Shadow Division, some are remnants of the Xuanyuan Family’s forces.”
Gu Jiao said, “The Black Wind Cavalry can field ten thousand combat-ready soldiers. That brings us to thirty thousand in total. The imperial army is currently engaged with the Liang forces. I’ve sent Wenren Chong to deliver a message, but I don’t know how many troops they’ll be able to send our way.”
The imperial army numbered one hundred twenty thousand, with eighty thousand designated for combat, the rest handling logistics and supplies.
The State of Jin claimed to have a force of two hundred thousand, but it was unclear whether that figure was accurate or how many of those were actual combat troops.
Gu Jiao summoned Advisor Hu. “How’s the translation work going on those documents I asked you to find people for?”
Advisor Hu quickly replied, “Halfway done! I’ll go push them to work faster!”
Gu Jiao reminded him, “Make sure, absolutely not a single word can be wrong.”
Advisor Hu patted his chest firmly. “Yes! You can rest assured, Commander. All four translators I found are legitimate descendants of the State of Jin. They’ve been thoroughly vetted at every level. No errors will get through!”
Gu Jiao said, “Good. What I need now is accurate and detailed intelligence on the State of Jin’s military forces.”
On the other side, Shangguan Yan was commanding operations from the rear, while Marquis Xuanping led troops into battle to crush the Liang army, and Wang Man took another force to besiege the Nangong Family’s holdings and recapture Xincheng.
Marquis Xuanping not only drove the Liang forces all the way out of the borders, they were relentlessly pushed back.
But he didn’t stop there. He charged straight into the frontier regions of the State of Liang itself and boldly planted the flag of the Great Yan upon enemy soil.
Back in the command tent, a steady stream of scouts came in to report victory after victory from both fronts, and Shangguan Yan was more than pleased with the results.
At this rate, it would only take another three to five days to bring the entire campaign to a close.
Outside the tent, a male voice called out urgently, “Your Highness! Wenren Chong of the Black Wind Cavalry requests an audience!”
Shangguan Yan immediately straightened, her expression turning serious. “Let him in!”
Wenren Chong entered the command tent in hurried strides, cupped his hands in salute, and respectfully presented the sealed letter he held in both hands.
Huan’er took the letter, opened it, and handed it to Shangguan Yan.
After reading it, Shangguan Yan shot to her feet with a sudden burst of energy, the full force of her presence as Crown Princess radiating outward. “Someone! Notify General Xiao and Great General Wang Man immediately. The battle must be concluded tonight. Tomorrow, we march, our next target is Pucheng!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
